How to find a Therapist: 4 things to Consider
By: Dominique Marcus, LCSW
Finding a therapist can be a confusing and overwhelming process, which can lead to an unfavorable experience in therapy. Below are four things to consider when looking for a therapist
Identify your goals: Before reaching out to a potential therapist have an idea of what it is you want to focus on during your sessions. It is okay if you have a general idea and not something clearly defined. You want to make sure you can present this information to your potential therapist and inquire if this is a subject matter they specialize in.
Know your preferences: Do you prefer a therapist that is a woman? Identifies as Black/African American? and/or Muslim? These are important things to consider when looking at different therapist profiles and websites. There is no shame in having a preference because you want to make sure you feel comfortable and have the ability to be yourself during your sessions
Fees and Payments: If you are paying out of pocket, how much can you afford to spend per session? If you are using insurance, it is important that you have a clear understanding of your benefits before looking for a therapist. Do you have a co payment/ co insurance? Are you required to meet you deductible before your mental health services are covered.
Have a consultation: You can go to a therapist profile and everything looks great but during your first sessions you realize you are not compatible and do not vibe well. It is important to find out if your potential therapist provides a free consultation that is at least 15 minutes in order to get a feel of their personality and ask any important questions you may have
